TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — State officials have permanently revoked the medical license of a New Jersey doctor who recently admitted concealing more than $3.6 million to evade taxes and pay kickbacks for referrals.
The decision by the state Board of Medical Examiners was announced Tuesday.
They found that Manoj Patharkar, who ran pain management clinics in Edison and Passaic, also indiscriminately prescribed Subsys, a powerful painkiller approved only for certain cancer patients.
The 45-year-old Patharkar pleaded guilty late last month to conspiracy, money-laundering and tax charges. Prosecutors say he diverted money and paid up to $1.5 million in kickbacks to 13 doctors to refer patients to his pain clinics.
Prosecutors will recommend he be sentenced up to 10 years in prison and pay a $500,000 penalty.
