BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — The Latest on man armed with a machete who was shot and killed at the University of Colorado (all times local):

5 p.m.

The chief of the University of Colorado police department says she believes two officers faced a life-threatening situation when they shot and killed a man armed with a machete on the Boulder campus.

Melissa Zak says it would be unfair to second guess the university officer and the Boulder officer who were involved in the shooting at a sports complex Wednesday morning.

Investigators say a man with a large machete threatened a person in the parking lot of the Champions Center and then followed the person inside the building, where a staff member called 911. Police confronted the man in a stairwell and shot him when he refused to drop the weapon.

Zak declined to say if the suspect was a student or if he had a criminal history or mental health problems.

No other injuries were reported, and the suspect's name has not been released.

Police at the University of Colorado say a report of an active shooter at the school's student center turned out to be false.

The report came just hours after police shot and killed a man wielding a machete elsewhere on campus on Wednesday.

In the earlier case, police spokesman Scott Pribble says the man brandished the machete in a menacing way during an altercation with another person in the parking lot of the sports complex and then went inside a building.

Pribble said police directed the man to put the weapon down and, when he refused, he was shot.

The university sent text alerts to all students, faculty and staffers warning them first about the armed man and later about the shooter report.
