BALTIMORE (AP) — Authorities have identified two Baltimore police officers involved in the fatal shooting of a man who police say fired at them with an AR-15-style rifle.

Police identified them Monday as Officers Warren Benn and Christopher Thomas. Both are currently assigned to the operational intelligence section. Police say Benn is a 16-year veteran of the department and Thomas as a six-year veteran.

Police have said four plainclothes officers heard gunfire from a west Baltimore apartment building Thursday night and drove toward the sound. Police say they saw a man shooting an AR-15 style rifle and, when he fired toward them, two officers returned fire. Police say Dayten Harper later died.

In a statement, Harper's family asked people to "err on the side of caution" regarding the depiction of "Harper's story."
