AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Julian (Hoo-lee-AHN') Castro's career in Democratic Party politics has been nothing short of meteoric.
Just 41 years old, Castro is the Obama administration's secretary of Housing and Urban Development — and mentioned as a possible running mate for presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. The San Antonio native was elected to the city council at age 26, then became mayor of San Antonio at 34.
Still, some question whether Castro has enough experience to step in for an ailing president, the first duty of a vice president.
But Castro would bring more than youth to the Democratic ticket. He could help Clinton boost turnout among Latino voters.
The first Hispanic chairman of Texas' Democratic Party, Gilberto Hinojosa, says that someone like Castro would bring a great deal of pride to Hispanics.
