MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Lawyers for the family of a 19-year-old man fatally shot by a Memphis police officer during a traffic stop last year are suing the city and the officer.
Murray Wells is an attorney for the family of Darrius Stewart. The suit he announced Wednesday accuses officer Connor Schilling of using excessive force in the July 17, 2015 shooting. The lawsuit seeks a jury trial and $17 million in damages.
Art Quinn is the lawyer representing Schilling. A woman who answered the phone at Quinn's office said he was out of town Wednesday and could not comment.
Authorities said Schilling shot Stewart as they fought when the officer tried to arrest the teen on two active warrants. Schilling is white. Stewart was black.
City spokesman Kyle Veazey did not immediately comment.
