WASHINGTON (AP) — The top House Democrat is urging her colleagues to vote against Republican bills that would upend the Iran nuclear deal even if they oppose the landmark agreement.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi says in a Tuesday letter the pact is the best way to keep Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
Votes are scheduled Wednesday in the GOP-led House on three Republican bills that the White House says will derail the pact. The White House says President Barack Obama will veto any measure that blocks the nuclear deal.
Among the measures is the Iran Accountability Act, which would impose new sanctions against Iran for continuing its ballistic missile program and for human rights violations.
The U.S., five other world powers and Iran finalized the nuclear pact nearly a year ago.
