CULPEPER, Va. (AP) — Authorities in Virginia say a sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man who confronted officers with a gun after killing another person.

The Culpeper County Sheriff's Office says in a statement on its website that deputies and state troopers responded to a report of breaking and entering Tuesday night in the village of Norman. The sheriff's office says a deputy shot and killed a man who confronted the officers with a gun.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says by telephone that the man who was shot had killed another person. A third person was injured, but the sheriff's office did not specify how or when that person was hurt.

Further details, including the races of those involved in the shooting, were not immediately available. State police are investigating.
