CLINTON, N.C. (AP) — Authorities say a man shot to death by police after holding a shotgun for 20 minutes in a North Carolina parking lot told officers he was not coming out of his pickup truck.
Clinton Police said Monday in a news release that their officers went to the Burger King parking lot after a 911 call from someone who said a man asked him to call police.
Police Chief Jay Tilley says officers spoke with the man for 20 minutes. The chief says several officers fired at 53-year-old John Coffey when he opened his door early Sunday and pointed the gun at police. Tilley says Coffey was white.
Seven Clinton officers and a state trooper have been placed on routine administrative leave as the shooting is investigated. Their races weren't released.
