EAST FLAT ROCK, N.C. (AP) — Authorities in North Carolina say sheriff's deputies have shot and killed a woman who appeared to pull a weapon on them during a home welfare check.

Maj. Frank Stout said in a news release that authorities were called to a home in East Flat Rock to check on a person about 5 p.m. Monday.

Stout said while deputies were waiting on involuntary-commitment papers, they were involved in a shooting. He told local news outlets the woman appeared to pull a weapon and the deputies fired. Stout said the deputies were not hurt.

Authorities identified the woman on Tuesday as 60-year-old Kay Frances Campbell. The races of Campbell and the police officers involved weren't immediately available.

The State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the shooting.
