RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The list of suggestions for replacing the name of a prominent segregationist on a Virginia middle school has been released, and a tribute to a former student who died on Sept. 11, 2001, is the top possibility.
News outlets report that the 17-page list has nearly 200 entries submitted by the public. They range from touching tributes to names of cartoon characters such as Big Bird.
In March, the county School Board voted to remove Harry Byrd's name from the school following a petition drive.
Byrd was a politician who fought against the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to end school segregation.
The name of former student Alysia Burton was suggested by more than 1,600 people.
Spokesman Andy Jenks says the school board will make the final decision.
