GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities in Florida are investigating after a pillar was smashed by vandals at Veterans Memorial Park near Gainesville.
The Gainesville Sun (http://bit.ly/1qlSqkA ) reports the damage was reported Sunday and investigators don't believe there is security footage of that section of the park.
The pillar is in a section of the park that commemorates the members of the U.S. military who've lost their lives since Sept. 11, 2001. The names of seven local men are listed on the broken granite.
Alachua County Sheriff's spokesman Art Forgey told the newspaper deputies don't know how many people were involved in the vandalism which likely happened between late Saturday night and 11 a.m. Sunday.
Jim Lynch, a member of the Alachua County Veterans Memorial Committee, says the group welcomes donations to repair the memorial.
