NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — Authorities in Virginia say a 26-year-old man is being treated for injuries after being shot by police in Newport News.
Newport News Police spokesman Brandon Maynard tells local news outlets that officers responded to a report of a man threatening suicide early Wednesday. Maynard says that when officers found the man, he was wearing a ballistic vest and was armed with a rifle and a handgun.
Maynard said the man was threatening "suicide by cop." He said the man challenged the officers and they fired one shot, hitting him in the lower abdomen. The man was taken to the hospital. His condition was not immediately available.
No officers were injured. Maynard said the officers were wearing body cameras. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.
