NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A bill that would require transgender students to use bathrooms that match their sex at birth has failed for the year in Tennessee.

The bill died in a House committee meeting Tuesday that was packed with transgender youth who oppose the measure.

Transgender students who testified before the committee said they were elated at the result and that sharing their personal stories seemed to have made a difference.

Religious conservatives had pushed the legislation, but some lawmakers were concerned it would create confusion. Local schools already have their own policies on bathroom use for transgender students.

Gov. Bill Haslam had objected to the bill because he was concerned that Tennessee could lose federal funding if it passed.
