DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — The Latest on the shooting of a North Carolina police officer by a suspect (all times local):
Police say a North Carolina officer was shot by a peeping suspect whom he had just brought to the booking area of the county jail.
The city of Durham said in a news release that Officer R.S. Turner saw the suspect reach for a gun in the back of his pants after unlocking his handcuffs in the booking area of the Durham County Jail early Monday.
Authorities say the officer and 44-year-old Danny McMillen struggled over the gun, which fired once, grazing Turner's abdomen. Turner has been released from the hospital.
Investigators say Turner had arrested McMillen 90 minutes earlier when responding to a peeping call.
McMillen faces secret peeping, assault with a deadly weapon on a government official and other charges. It wasn't known if he has a lawyer.
A spokeswoman for the Durham County Sheriff's Office says a Durham police officer was shot outside the secure perimeter of the county's detention facility.
Spokeswoman Tamara Gibbs said in a news release that the center is operating normally after the shooting that occurred shortly before 4 a.m. Monday.
She says the suspect was in the custody of the Durham Police Department when the shooting occurred near the sally port of an area designated for the magistrate at the facility. Prior to entering the secure perimeter, each law enforcement agency provides its own security. Police describe the area as a booking area.
She says a detention officer assisted Durham police in an attempt to control the suspect.
