WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration's lead negotiator for last year's global climate deal is stepping down.

Todd Stern has been the State Department's envoy for climate talks since 2009. His work culminated with last year's Paris agreement designed to reduce carbon emissions and stem the effects of climate change.

In a statement, Secretary of State John Kerry hailed Stern for "his mastery of the climate challenge and all of its nuances, his diligence and his negotiating skills."

Stern will be replaced next month by Jonathan Pershing, the Energy Department's senior climate adviser.
