NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department said on Wednesday it has opened a civil investigation into the health and safety conditions in New York City's public housing and the extent residents have elevated blood-lead levels.

In a court filing, the office of Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara asked a federal judge to direct the city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to produce information in response to a civil investigative demand.

The court filing said the investigation was also looking at whether the New York City Housing Authority had made false claims to the U.S. government related to conditions in its public housing.
