Latest: Chicago police say woman in custody after shootout

CHICAGO (AP) — The Latest on a shooting in Chicago that police say left three officers wounded and one suspect dead (all times local):

12:25 a.m.

Chicago police say a woman is being questioned in connection with a shootout between several officers investigating drug activity and a suspect they were pursuing.

The shootout on the city's West Side left the man dead and three police officers wounded.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said late Monday the officers are being treated at a hospital for injuries that are not life-threatening.

Guglielmi says the officers observed a man and a woman acting suspiciously. He says the man fled after police announced their presence. He ran into a gangway and opened fire, wounding the three officers. At least one returned fire, killing the suspect. A weapon was recovered at the scene of the shooting.

Guglielmi says the woman, who wasn't immediately identified, was being questioned by investigators.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the shooting of three police officers investigating drug activity on the city's West Side is another example of the men and women of the department putting themselves in danger to keep the city safe.

A shootout between the officers and one of two suspects also left one suspect dead.

Emanuel released a statement, saying the officers' injuries were a reminder of the dangers police officers face and the "bravery that they routinely display."

Authorities say after the officers observed a man and a woman engaged in suspicious activity, they announced their presence. The suspects fled, with one heading for a gangway, where authorities say he opened fire on officers. The woman was taken into custody.

This item has been updated to correct that police say the suspects were a man and a woman, not two men.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said late Monday night that the officers are being treated at a hospital for injuries that are not life-threatening.

Guglielmi says the shooting occurred as five police officers were investigating reported drug activity in a residential area.

Guglielmi says the officers observed a man and a woman acting suspiciously and decided to investigate further, announcing their presence. The man ran into a gangway between two buildings and opened fire in the direction of the officers, hitting three of them multiple times.

One of the officers returned fire, fatally injuring the suspect, who hasn't been identified. The woman was taken into custody.
