NEW YORK (AP) — Former New York City Mayor David Dinkins says he's been strengthened by the "messages of love and support" that he received during his hospital stay.

His representative says the 88-year-old Dinkins is continuing to recover following a bout of pneumonia. He's now home after nearly three weeks in the hospital.

Dinkins, who's 88, thanked the public on Thursday. He says all the good wishes he's received have warmed his heart and lifted his spirit.

Dinkins was the first black mayor of the nation's largest city. The Democrat served one term, from 1990 to 1993.

He was admitted to New York Presbyterian Hospital on the evening of Feb. 18.

Dinkins was treated for pneumonia at the same hospital in 2013.
