What We Know: The president's immigration policies

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a challenge to President Barack Obama's immigration plans. A look at how that could play out over the next year:

—Given the court action, Obama may have one last chance to deliver on his promise to shield from deportation up to 5 million immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally.

—The president's executive actions were put on hold by lower courts because of claims Obama had exceeded his authority.

—The Supreme Court is expected to rule on his plans by late June.

—If Obama prevails, it still could be challenging to implement his orders with only a half-year left in his presidency.

—There also is uncertainty about what would happen if the next president wanted to reverse Obama's policies.

—Many immigrants feel abandoned by Obama because of his administration's recent deportation raids.
