ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Texas Sen. Ted Cruz says an issue raised by GOP presidential rival Donald Trump about whether his Canadian birth compromises his eligibility to become president is "quite straightforward and settled law."
Trump said in a Wednesday interview on Fox News he wants Cruz to "get some kind of an order" from a court to block any potential lawsuit challenging his citizenship.
Asked about Trump's comments Wednesday while campaigning in Iowa, Cruz said that "people will continue to make political noise about it, but as a legal matter, it's quite straightforward."
Cruz was born in Calgary, Canada to an American mother and Cuban father. He renounced his Canadian citizenship in 2014.
He says it is settled law that the child of a U.S. citizen born abroad is a natural born citizen.
