MIAMI (AP) — An elderly Florida man captured in Mexico after 37 years as a fugitive has been found mentally incompetent by a Miami federal judge.
U.S. District Judge Marcia Cooke on Monday ordered treatment at a prison hospital for 82-year-old Robert Anton Woodring, who jumped bail in 1977. Woodring's attorney told the South Florida Sun Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1S5LG4P) that he is suffering from Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
Prosecutors say Woodring failed to surrender for a seven-year prison sentence for fraud and for a related conviction involving an attempt to flee in his 60-foot yacht so officials couldn't seize it. The bail-jumping conviction carries another one-year prison term.
U.S. Marshals caught Woodring in Guadalajara, Mexico, in December 2014 after getting a tip while searching for another fugitive. Mexican officials sent him back to the U.S.
