Former Georgia lawmaker admits responsibility in fraud case

ATLANTA (AP) — An ex-Georgia lawmaker and civil rights activist who pleaded guilty to tax fraud has told a judge he takes full responsibility for his actions and said he will not make the same mistakes again.

Tyrone Brooks, an Atlanta Democrat, pleaded guilty in April to one count of filing a false tax document and no contest to five counts of mail and wire fraud. Brooks told U.S. District Judge Amy Totenberg Friday he should have used proper accounting.

Prosecutors have asked Totenberg for a two-year prison sentence. Brooks' lawyers are seeking five years' probation, citing his years of dedicated civil rights work.

Totenberg said she needs the weekend to think about the case and plans to sentence Brooks on Monday.

Prosecutors said Brooks still hasn't adequately shown he has accepted responsibility.
