WASHINGTON (AP) — Authorities say they're investigating after police officers from Maryland fatally shot the driver of a carjacked vehicle pursued into Washington.

D.C. police identified the man Tuesday as 62-year-old James Covington Jr. of Washington. Prince George's County police say officers responded to a report of an armed carjacking in Fort Washington on Monday night and chased the car north into the city. D.C. police say after a confrontation Covington was shot and later died at a hospital.

County police identified the officers who fired their weapons as Christopher Malinowski and Anthony Sciaretta. Forest Heights Police Chief Stewart Russell tells The Washington Post that Officer Frank Campbell and Cpl. Anthony Rease joined the pursuit and fired their weapons.

D.C. police are investigating the shooting and the officers are on administrative leave while their departments investigate.
