AKRON, Ohio (AP) — A judge has told a man that he will "die in prison" for killing an off-duty Ohio police officer after being asked to leave a bar.
Thirty-six-year-old Kenan Ivery was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the slaying of Akron police officer Justin Winebrenner last November. Judge Alison McCarty added 65 years to the sentence because Ivery injured four others while spraying bullets in the bar.
The sentence was a formality after a jury last week voted against the death penalty.
Ivery apologized to his victims before sentencing. He testified at trial that he returned to the bar to retrieve food he had left and that he fired in self-defense after being surrounded by Winebrenner and several other men.
