TORONTO (AP) — Former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has a new tumor growing on his bladder and is awaiting word on whether it is cancerous.

Ford previously underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his abdomen. He was diagnosed with malignant liposarcoma last year, forcing him to quit re-election bid for mayor. He ran for his old seat in city council instead and won.

After months of denials, Ford in 2013 acknowledged he had smoked crack cocaine in one of his "drunken stupors," but he refused to resign.

Dan Jacobs, Ford's chief of staff, issued a statement Wednesday that said Ford was experiencing abdominal pain, and he has spent time undergoing examination and testing.

Ford also sent a tweet thanking his supporters for their "continued thoughts and prayers."

"I remain optimistic that I will be able to overcome this setback," he tweeted.
