KANSAS CITY (Reuters) - Kansas City starting pitcher Edinson Volquez took the mound in Game One of the World Series after learning just before the game against the Mets that his father had died, ESPN reported.
Volquez was on his way to Kauffman Stadium for the biggest start of his career when he learned the news that his father, Daniel, had died in the Dominican Republic, ESPNdeportes.com reported, citing a family source.
Daniel Volquez, 63, died of heart complications, the report said.
The American League champion Royals and National League pennant-winning New York Mets were beginning the best-of-seven series for the championship of Major League Baseball.
