(Reuters) - One person was injured and others were trapped by a fire burning several Maryland town houses on Wednesday night after residents called to report hearing an explosion, officials said.
The Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services said on its Twitter account that crews encountered "heavy fire" at the homes in Columbia, some 20 miles southwest of Baltimore.
The fire department said a worker for Baltimore Gas and Electric was injured and one resident had been rescued from the flames, which fully engulfed at least one unit and had spread to others.
The fire department said people were trapped but did not say how many.
It was not immediately clear if anyone else was injured or if anyone was killed. Further details were not immediately available.
Local broadcaster WJZ published a video online showing flames scorching one of the units and plumes of black smoke shooting into the air.
