Biden: change in attitudes will improve police relations

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden says relations between police and the community will improve when both sides truly see and value each other.

Biden said community policing, along with a change in attitudes, can address crime and social problems.

He spoke Monday at a White House event honoring "Champions of Change" who have created plans to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and youth.

Biden said a police officer in a tough neighborhood may see a kid with dreadlocks as a gang member, instead of a kid with potential to be a great poet or author. The community also shouldn't think of trouble at the first sight of law enforcement, he said.

Biden said "the truth is, we are not seeing each other, very much" and we've got to fix it.
