DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — A South Florida K-9 officer will not face criminal charges after two police dogs were found dead from overheating inside an unmarked SUV parked outside his home.

The Broward State Attorney's Office reported Wednesday that Hialeah Police Officer Nelson Enriquez was neglectful, but he didn't intentionally kill the animals. The Miami Herald ( ) reports that since Florida's animal cruelty statute has nothing equivalent to a manslaughter charge, prosecutors determined that Enriquez should not be held criminally liable for the death of Hektor, a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois, and Jimmy, a 6-year-old bloodhound.

Enriquez has been on administrative duty since May when the dogs died. Hialeah police are still conducting an internal investigation. Enriquez has said he was exhausted from working a midnight shift and forgot the dogs in his vehicle.
