CULLMAN, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say a police chase involving a stolen truck in northern Alabama led to a gunfight that left a suspect dead and an officer wounded.

WHNT-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1NuJsdE ) the chase began Sunday when someone stole a truck while its owners were riding an ATV. Ed Ralston, police chief for the city of Arab, said the owners reported the thief shot at them when they went after the truck.

Ralston says officers chased the truck across the Cullman County line when the suspect fled on foot. He says that's when the shooting started.

Arab police officer Jeff Warren was shot in the leg. Authorities said 36-year-old Christopher Ray Tompkins was killed by multiple gunshots.

Al.com reports (http://bit.ly/1Jgzvg0 ) court records show Tompkins' criminal record included convictions for theft, burglary and assault.
