BOSTON (AP) — A federal judge is weighing the future of a proposed Indian-operated gambling hall on Massachusetts' famed Martha's Vineyard.
U.S. District Court Judge Dennis Saylor heard arguments Wednesday in the state's bid to block the Aquinnah Wampanoag from opening a casino at the site of an unfinished tribal community center on the resort island.
The state, the town of Aquinnah and a local community association have sued to block the project. Lawyers argued in court that the tribe specifically forfeited its gambling rights when it reached a settlement for tribal land on the island.
But the tribe says federal law allows it to offer "high stakes" bingo-style games on the property.
