WASHINGTON (AP) — A group of children and their parents have brought their message supporting statehood for the District of Columbia to the lawn of the U.S. Capitol.
The children sang a song on Sunday from a recent episode of HBO's "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver." The song lampoons those who oppose representation in Congress for residents of the nation's capital.
Statehood supporter Tim Krepp tells WTOP-FM (http://tinyurl.com/pdtwp7e ) that the song was a way for people who aren't normally part of the movement to get involved.
Last year, Congress held its first hearing on statehood for the District in 21 years, but a bill introduced by Democratic Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware is not expected to go anywhere. Republicans have long opposed turning the District into a state.
