FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) — A federal judge in Alabama wants to hear from a pregnant inmate who's changed her mind on whether she wants an abortion.
U.S. District Judge Abdul Kallon ordered authorities to have the woman in court for a hearing Friday morning.
The woman filed a federal lawsuit last week seeking an order that would allow her to leave the Lauderdale County jail to undergo an abortion.
But this week, the prisoner filed a sworn statement saying she's changed her mind and doesn't want the procedure. The reversal came as the state went to court trying to strip the woman of her parental rights, a move that could block her right to choose an abortion.
An American Civil Liberties Union lawyer representing the woman calls her change of opinion "highly suspicious."
