(Reuters) - Police in Utah found a 12-year-old girl dead in an overgrown field on Friday and said evidence of trauma and indicators at the scene suggest she was murdered.
The West Valley City Police Department said the girl's mother approached two officers at a 7-Eleven store at 1:30 a.m. and told them her daughter had been missing since midnight.
Officers organized a search and used cell phone technology to narrow the area, the police department said in a statement. The body was discovered in a field of 3- to 4-foot high grass, shrubs and trees behind a row of homes, it said.
"Evidence of trauma and indicators at scene suggest 12-year-old girl's death is homicide," it said. "Investigators now gathering evidence, canvassing area, following leads. Any suspect description premature at this point."
Few other details were immediately available. West Valley City is a western suburb of Salt Lake City.
