BERLIN (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel's chief of staff, Peter Altmaier, has asked the U.S. ambassador in Berlin for a meeting over allegations that U.S. spies bugged senior government ministers, a German government source told Reuters on Thursday.
"The Chancellor's Chief of Staff has invited U.S. Ambassador John Emerson to a meeting because of the new bugging revelations. The conversation is due to take place on Thursday afternoon," said the source.
In the latest twist in an ongoing scandal over U.S. spying in Germany, media reported that the National Security Agency (NSA) bugged several senior government members in addition to Merkel, including the economy and finance ministers.
