"As a Representative from Texas and Speaker of the House, Jim was passionate about investing in infrastructure, and he worked tirelessly to promote peace in Central America. Today, our thoughts and prayers are with Jim's family and friends, and the people he represented in Congress for so many years." — President Barack Obama.

I valued his wise counsel and his commitment to the ideals of human rights, democracy, and social justice in the Americas. His leadership at home and abroad was instrumental in advancing equitable development throughout the world. His family is in our thoughts and prayers. We hope that their warm memories and the love and support of the many people whose lives Jim has touched will be of comfort to them in the days ahead."— Former President Jimmy Carter.
