WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Defense Secretary Ash Carter told lawmakers on Wednesday he was skeptical of Republican plans to boost defense spending through the department's war funding account and urged them instead to work with him to achieve a multi-year spending agreement.

Carter acknowledged Republican plans would give the Pentagon a budget total close to that requested by President Barack Obama. But he said the one-year deal would be "managerially unsound" and would not give the department the stability it needs to plan effectively.

"Secretary Carter is sowing the seeds for a new multi-year bipartisan deal that would provide critical defense and non-defense spending as outlined in the president's budget request," a senior defense official said.
