(Reuters) - A New York City police officer was shot on duty on Saturday and has been taken to a hospital, a police spokesman said.
The plainclothes officer was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center but a condition was not available, said a spokesman for the New York City Police Department, who did not wish to be identified. The spokesman did not know if a suspect was in custody.
The New York Times quoted top police spokesman Stephen Davis as saying that the officer was in critical but stable condition. The name of the wounded officer was not released.
The shooting happened around 6:15 p.m. local time in the borough of Queens, police said.
A spokesperson for Jamaica Hospital was not immediately available for comment.
