Romania names 14 new ambassadors, ex-spy chief sent to US

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — A former Romanian spy chief has been named as ambassador to the U.S.

George Maior, who headed the Romanian Intelligence Service for nine years, will represent Romania in Washington. He was on a list of 14 new ambassadors unveiled by President Klaus Iohannis on Thursday.

The 47-year-old Maior is known for his pro-American stance. He resigned in January after criticizing the country's top court for rejecting security laws which allowed the government to collect data on people without court approval.

Iohannis named 59-year-old Emil Hurezeanu as ambassador to Germany. Hurezeanu defected to West Germany under communism and worked at Radio Free Europe from 1983 to 1994.
