McLEAN, Va. (AP) — A Virginia county has agreed to pay nearly $3 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit after one of its police officers shot and killed a man in the doorway of his home two years ago.
Fairfax County Officer Adam Torres fatally shot 46-year-old John Geer of Springfield in August 2013 after a report of a domestic dispute. Witnesses, including other officers, said Geer was unarmed and had his hands up when he was shot.
Michael Lieberman, attorney for the Geer family, said he believes the $2.95 million settlement is the largest in Virginia history in connection with a police shooting. The settlement contains no admission of liability on the county's part. Backlash over the shooting has prompted the county to establish a commission that is reviewing police procedures.
