THE HAGUE (Reuters) - The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court said on Wednesday she had examined widespread allegations of war crimes by Islamic State fighters in Syria and Iraq, but that the scope for an investigation is "limited".

"The jurisdictional basis for opening a preliminary examination into this situation is too narrow at this stage," Fatou Bensouda said in a statement.

A renewed commitment by concerned states "may help identify viable avenues" to investigate the alleged crimes, she said.
