BEIRUT (Reuters) - The Syrian military, backed by fighters from Hezbollah, used heavy artillery to close in on the city of Zabadani near the border with Lebanon on Friday, Lebanese Hezbollah-run al-Manar television reported.
It showed footage of fighters in a mountainous area using heavy weapons around the city and showed the body of at least one enemy combatant. The channel said the operation, which was coordinated with Syrian air force bombardments, was aimed at recapturing the whole area.
Syrian forces backed by pro-government fighters have regularly clashed with insurgents in the mountainous area north of the capital Damascus. Armed groups in the area include al Qaeda's Syria wing Nusra Front as well as insurgent brigades.
