ABUJA (Reuters) - Boko Haram has now been pushed out of all but three local government areas in northeast Nigeria, the army chief of staff said on Tuesday, after a string of victories against the Islamist militants.

At the start of this year the Islamists, who are fighting to establish an Islamic state in religiously mixed Nigeria, controlled around 20 local government areas (LGAs).

"We have three local governments remaining, Abadam,Kalabaldi and Gwoza, and we are optimistic that with time we will liberate those local governments," Lieutenant-General Tobiah Minimah told reporters.
