(Reuters) - The city manager of Ferguson, Missouri, has resigned following a U.S. Justice Department report that was highly critical of the city's police practices, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.

The Times said the resignation of John Shaw, who had held the position in the St. Louis suburb since 2007, was announced at a City Council meeting.

The Justice Department launched an investigation into Ferguson after last summer's shooting death of unarmed black teen Michael Brown, 18, by a white police officer.
