WASHINGTON (AP) — A political group allied with House GOP leaders said Monday it would spend more than $400,000 this week in advertising that is targeting other Republicans.
The ads are aimed at pressuring House Republicans to end the impasse over Homeland Security funding. The expenditures by the American Action Network were unusual in that they targeted conservative Republicans, rather than Democrats.
Included were broadcast ads in the districts of three House Republicans and digital ads in the districts of nine Republicans who opposed the House leadership's bill last Friday financing the agency for three weeks.
Also being financed were a national radio ad being aired on the shows of conservative hosts Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, and operator calls in the districts of 50 House Republicans who opposed that bill.
"Some in Washington are willing to put our security at risk by jeopardizing critical security funding," the announcer says in one ad with the feel of attack advertising usually employed against the other party. "That's the wrong message to send to our enemies. Tell Congressman Tim Huelskamp to fund Homeland Security."
Huelskamp is a Kansas conservative.
