Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush on Tuesday released hundreds of thousands of emails sent to and from his person email address during his time in office. Here's a look at how Bush responded to constituents by email during a few of the most notable moments of his tenure as the state's chief executive. The names and email addresses of those with whom Bush corresponded have been removed.

ELIÁN GONZÁLEZ

In 1999, five-year-old Elian Gonzalez was found clinging to an inner tube off the Florida coast after his mother and others fleeing Cuba drowned trying to reach American soil. He was taken to live with relatives in Miami, but his father, who had remained on the island, demanded the boy be sent back. Gonzalez's relatives refused to relinquish him, and on April 22, 2000, federal agents seized the boy in a raid.

RE: Pontius Clinton Washes his hands & Leaves Elian Case To Reno

You were right. I went to sleep believing that a deal was in the works and it now appears that it was a sham.

RE: Freedom and Liberty for Elian

Paul, thanks for writing. I advocated mediation which was suggested by the federal appellate court. It appeared as of late last night, this was yielding a positive result. However, the federal government acted rashly and justice is being denied. it is a sad day.

TERRI SCHIAVO

A devout Catholic, Bush personally intervened in 2003 in the case of Terri Schiavo, a Florida woman who had spent more than a decade in what doctors described as a "persistent vegetative state." Her husband, Michael, wanted her feeding tube removed, arguing that she once told him she would not want to be kept alive artificially. But her parents disagreed and petitioned Bush for help. The governor's efforts to order that she remain on life support were later ruled unconstitutional, and Schiavo died in 2005.

RE: Terri

No. I don't have the power to issue an executive order to remove Mr. Schiavo as guardian. There are limits to what a governor can do.

RE: MY one question for you/Fw: This is what they want to hear from you

I cannot offer much hope. I am sickened by this situation and pray for her family. We have looked at every angle, every legal possibility and will continue to do so. It is clear that we need to make living wills the norm for families in our state. Too few people use them.

RE: Thanks for sympathy about my husband

you are making me cry. Maybe it is the day with Terri's death. I don't know but the fact that you would write what you did given your loss, makes me thank God Almighty that there are people like yourself. I am nothing.

Let me know how I can ever be of help to you and your family.

2000 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION RECOUNT

Bush found himself thrust into the national spotlight in the aftermath of the 2000 presidential election, in which a razor-thin margin in Florida between his brother, George W. Bush, and Vice President Al Gore led to recounts and legal battles that ended in the U.S. Supreme Court.

RE: The Palm Beach County Fiasco

I believe in the rule of law. We have elections laws and they need to be enforced. I believe my brother will win if the law is adhered to. I am sickened by the "second campaign" now being waged. It degrades our great state and more importantly, does threaten our democracy. I am going to save your email as a reminder that there are good decent people who are very concerned about what is happening to our great and wondrous country.

RE: Recounting in Florida...

My position has been consistent. I want the rule of law to prevail. We have pretty clear laws about certifying this election. Where there is confusion a swift and concise judicial ruling should provide guidance. I hope and pray the winner will be determined on Friday for the sake of our country.

RE: Please Mr. Bush

Joe, thanks for writing. After this election is completed, I am going to ask a bi partisan group of Floridians to make recommendations on how to improve our election system. Don't give up faith in our democracy!
