SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The parents of a mentally ill teen killed by police in East Texas say officers had several opportunities to subdue the girl before shots were fired.

Erik Coignard said Monday that he wants more information about the events that led up to his 17-year-old daughter, Kristiana, being shot to death last month in the lobby of a Longview police station.

The shooting has garnered attention amid increased scrutiny surrounding law enforcement's use of deadly force.

Police released a video showing the teenager scuffling with an officer before lunging at him with a butcher knife. Police say he and another officer fired multiple shots after a Taser had no effect.

The Texas Rangers are investigating. Coignard says his daughter had a history of mental illness, but did not specify a diagnosis.
