FALCON HEIGHTS, Texas (AP) — A suspected drug smuggler is dead following a Border Patrol shooting in South Texas.

The Starr County Sheriff's Office says in a statement that one person was shot and killed on the U.S. side of the border when agents came under fire early Wednesday morning.

Sheriff's officials say agents had apprehended four drug smugglers and were searching for another when shots were exchanged between the fifth suspect and an agent.

The suspect was struck several times and later died at a hospital. The agent was not injured.

The Border Patrol says in a statement that the agents were investigating suspected drug smuggling when they encountered the suspects in the desert hauling packages of narcotics.
