ATLANTA (Reuters) - A Vietnam War veteran was executed in Georgia on Tuesday for the murder of a sheriff's deputy, state officials said, making him the first U.S. inmate put to death in 2015.

Andrew Brannan, 66, was executed at 8:33 p.m. at a facility in Jackson, Georgia, officials said in a statement. The death sentence was carried out after the U.S. Supreme Court denied a request to block it from Brannan's attorneys, who sought clemency based on trauma they said he suffered fighting in the Vietnam War.
