WASHINGTON (AP) — Retiring Rep. John Dingell has been released from the hospital after suffering a fractured hip earlier this month.

The 88-year-old Michigan Democrat is the longest-serving member of Congress, having been elected in 1955.

An update was posted Tuesday on Facebook and Twitter showing a smiling Dingell giving a thumbs-up from the passenger seat of a car. Dingell said he was "finally out of here" and thanked staff at George Washington University Hospital for "wonderful care."

Dingell was hospitalized Dec. 12 after fracturing his hip in a fall.

His wife, Debbie Dingell, said it was by "sheer grit and determination" that her husband did not miss the final days of his last House session this month. Debbie Dingell was elected last month to replace her husband.
